Which shotput thrower/videos would you consider to be the best options for a new thrower or coach to study to learn technique?

John Godina is very good to watch, but overall it depends on who you relate to. Some people relate to Reese Hoffa better than Christian Cantwell.....each are very different physically. Watch as much video as possible! That's what is best!

to be honest, the videos put to music are awesome. They're motivational and there's a bunch of great throwers on one clip. You can watch one aspect of each throw and decide what works for you.......and get totally pumped.

example - watch a highlight clip and observe every thrower's left leg as they turn in the back. Then decide what you want to work on, then throw farther.

I think that it is really great to watch those big guys like Cantwell, but I think it is best to watch someone who is relatively close to you in size and body type. If your a big tank like Cantwell then I guess its would be alright. If your a smaller guy I think Nelson would be good. I thought noone else in the world could throw like Nelson, but Derek Anderson who is a very small guy threw 65'. He wasn't even a thick guy.

I have watched a lot of the newer videos and I haven't found a great one yet. My favorite is a video by Ron Backes(older video). He really walks you through the throw and he is of average size 6'2 255. He is not like Oldfield where he was a freak of an athlete. This gentleman was a very sound thrower, I believe he was a 69 footer.

hey guys

i'm new in this site.

Im from south africa.

I think John Godina has a great tecnique.
If you watch his left foot just before he puts the shot.

It just brievely touches the ground. he doesnt put it on the ground a pauses for a wile like other throwers.

I think that its a great way to throw.

I think Larry Judge has put together some great training videos. I think he really breaks down the technique very well.

He was. I had the privilege of being coached by Ron for two years. That's a great video, no matter how cheesy the music... He really knows his throwing!

Aside from that, I think Rutger Smith does some things really well. I think it's important to kind of watch everybody. Then see what you think will work best for you and incorporate it into your throwing.

One quick thing that made me wince a little is when the suggestion of watching Adam Nelson for smaller throwers came out. I'm never one to criticize someone who has done so much to increase the visibility of throwing in a nation where other sports dominate the recruiting of athletes, but his form is NOT one for a smaller thrower to try to emulate. All of his distance, which is certainly a lot, comes from his core. His power position is not very good for someone who doesn't have his core strength, which is just about everyone. His power position doesn't allow him to throw with his legs which is probably one of the most critical aspects of throwing by an undersized thrower. The explosive power the legs can provide, by any young thrower, will certainly surpass the explosive power the core can provide as it requires years of training to establish that strength and coordination. Adam Nelson throws far, and his form works for him, but I wouldn't suggest anyone else try to emulate it.

Post edited by: C Donohoue, at: 2008/02/07 02:43

Watch as much film as possible!!! Analyze what different throwers do. See what works and what doesn't. If you can, watch the fouls as well and see what when wrong. Find someone that you can mimic. Don't find someone who throws far just because they throw far. There are plenty of people who throw in the 60 foot range that have amazing form. Adam Nelson has a one-of-a-kind form (and it is probably just for him) and he can throw it 70+ feet because he practiced it and became very efficient and explosive with it. Find some videos, watch them with your coach, watch them with fellow throwers, but watch them.

Post edited by: C Donohoue, at: 2008/02/07 07:05
