Most often you can tell if you need to move to a wood/metal discus when your rubber discus starts to turn in the wind. This is a sign that the discus is spinning to quickly for the discus to compensate. Also try this put a piece of white tape about an inch wide on the rim of the discus, if when you throw all you see is a white rim it is time to change. This can be used to gauge what % rim weighted wood/metal discus you will need. Most beginners start with a 50-60% rim weight these are mostly wood. Then you can get 70-85 and even up to 90% but 90 tends to be the elite throwers.

A Rubber discus tends to be around the 20-30% rim weight then you go to a wooden one and it is about 60%, then the metal ones start around 70% and up.
